The Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine is a leading academic unit dedicated to advancing the care of patients with blood disorders and cancers. As an integral part of one of the nation’s largest health systems, the division emphasizes compassionate, multidisciplinary care to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
Mission: Committed to clinical excellence, the division provides comprehensive treatment for benign hematologic disorders, malignant hematologic conditions, and solid tumors. It drives innovation through cutting-edge research and trains the next generation of specialists to deliver holistic, patient-centered care.
Leadership: The division is led by Director Bassel El-Rayes, MD, a renowned expert in gastrointestinal oncology and clinical trials, who oversees a team of over 50 faculty members specializing in various subspecialties.
Services: Offering state-of-the-art diagnostics, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, bone marrow transplants, and cellular therapies at UAB Hospital and the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. Multidisciplinary clinics ensure personalized, evidence-based treatment plans.
Research: Focused on translational biomedical research, including basic science, clinical trials, and novel therapies for drug resistance, precision medicine, sickle cell disease, and tumor immunology. The division contributes to national advancements in cancer survival and blood disorder management.
Education: The ACGME-accredited three-year Hematology and Oncology Fellowship Program provides hands-on clinical training, research opportunities, and preparation for ABIM subspecialty certification. Additional programs include advanced fellowships in bone marrow transplant and neuro-oncology.
